DIN 2303

The DIN 2303 standard “Welding in the field of defense technology” defines specific requirements and quality standards for welding in the field of defense technology. The standard defines different component classes depending on the complexity and critical function of the components as well as the safety classes according to their use in the military sector.

The certificate of manufacturer qualification for defense technology

Laser welding technology(laser welding) is one of the most effective joining processes for defense technology due to its high precision in the processing of components and good process stability. In order to meet the specific quality requirements for the manufacture and repair of defense technology products, all certified companies must prove that they are qualified manufacturers of components for military use and that their processes comply with the high quality and safety standards by means of a current manufacturer’s certificate in accordance with DIN 2303.

The operating certificate in accordance with DIN 2303 lists all processes that were inspected and evaluated as part of the certification process. In the area of laser processing for defense technology at BLS, this concerns process 52 “laser beam welding” with the variants “solid-state” and “gas laser beam welding” as well as “laser deposition welding” and “laser powder deposition welding”.
Since February 2022, BLS Lasertechnology GmbH has held a certified certificate of manufacturer qualification in accordance with DIN 2303 for the following processes:

The certification process according to DIN 2303

Preparation: All relevant documents and records are compiled in the company in accordance with the requirements of the DIN 2303 standard: Quality management documents, process descriptions, training certificates and test protocols.
Audit preparation: Before the certification audit, the company first carries out internal audits to ensure that all processes meet the requirements of DIN 2303. Any deviations or potential for improvement are identified and rectified.
Certification audit: During this audit, an independent certifier examines the processes and their documentation in the company. As a rule, the audit consists of a document review, interviews with employees and an inspection of the facilities and production site.
Evaluation and reporting: After the audit, the certifier evaluates the results and prepares a report confirming the company’s conformity with the requirements of DIN 2303. Any deviations or non-conformities are documented.
Issue of certificate: As soon as the company fulfills all requirements and the identified deviations from the standard have been rectified, the certificate is issued in accordance with DIN 2303. This certifies that the company is qualified to manufacture components in the field of defense technology in accordance with the standards of the norm.
The company certificate in accordance with DIN 2303 is generally valid for one to three years. Once the validity period has expired, the processing company must undergo recertification in order to continue to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of DIN 2303.
The period of validity of the certificate depends, among other things, on whether the company has an in-house welding engineer. The duration of the award is at the discretion of the auditor, who takes into account the technical interview, the technical suitability of the welding supervisor and the quality of the management system itself.
For the initial certification of companies with an internal welding engineer, the certificate is initially issued for two years in accordance with DIN 2303. For recertification in 2024, BLS Lasertechnology GmbH received an operating certificate for the full three years, which is valid until 17.02.2027.
